    making feminised seeds

    What's up AFN,

Cool site. I am an autoflower grower as well. Doing my 4th grow now and it is my biggest by far. I will post pics of it when I get my digital camera.

My question is about making feminised seeds. There are many methods that are available and I was wondering if anyone here has tried any? I have some dwarf plants right now that I was thinking about over flowering and seeing if I can make bananas for pollination (see http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs...zed-seeds.html - sorry about linking to another board, it is just a useful article about how to make feminised seeds organically). But I was wondering if anyone else had used methods like gibberellic acid or anything else that worked. I used to think that my huge sack of lowryder #2 seeds I grew were almost strictly female, hitting a f2m ratio of nearly 5:1. Lately however I realized I might have just been getting lucky as the last 12 plants I started only had 4 fems (and under the same methods and mediums as previous grows) so I'm looking for ways to keep my production up!

Maybe I am misunderstanding the use of the Gibberellic acid...I thought I DID want to induce male flowers on my female plant. Then I was supposed to collect the pollen from those male flowers and use it to pollinate another female plant. The idea would be that the pollen would only contain an X chromosome and any seeds that resulted from putting the "hermie" pollen on a female plant would create feminized seeds. I didn't think you were supposed to take seeds and soak them in anything.

p.s. we linked the same articles, I think it has just been copied to every board now.

Good info. Thanks. I only have 2 seeds of lowlife ak47 x diesel that I got from a friend so I am going to see if I can do a seed grow with these. Going to try your method first and think about feminised seeds later.

Right now I have a vegging area that is slightly bigger than my flowering area in order to remove males from the group and still flower a full batch. The reason I like the idea of feminised seeds is because I could turn some of that vegging area into a flowering area with no loss of space due to males.

Creating feminized seeds is an art, there are a few different methods of application. I have written about some of my different methods of making seeds in previous HIGH TIMES articles. I have use gibberellic acid, light stress, ph stress, and fertilizer stress to force my plants to make seeds. All these methods are harsh on the plants, and some like the gibbrellic acid, are not organic. In my search for cleaner more earth-friendly ways of working with the cannabis plant, I have found a new way to make feminized seeds.

Feminized seeds occur as a result of stress, other than genetics. All cannabis plants can and will make male flowers under stress. Certain strains like a higher PH, some like a lower one. Some like a lot of food, some like a lot less. There is quite a lot of variety in marijuana genetics, and you can’t treat every plant the same way.

It takes many harvests before you really get to know a particular strain. Just like getting to know human friends, it takes time. I have grown strains for a decade and am truly getting to know every nuance the different plants exhibit. I can recognize them from a distance. I must say that I get a lot of help from my friends, both in making seeds and learning new and better ways of working with this sacred plant.marijuana seeds

please excuse me if my noob is showing, but i've never heard of this. BAP, nor IAA. A general introduction would be greatly appreciated as well as method of application. Thanks thai buddha your willingness to help is greatly appreciated and i don't take it lightly, no bullshit. although there are so many friendly people in the online scene, it can be hard to find someone willing to spend the time to share knowledge with a complete stranger. good karma headed your way brother, no doubt

EDIT: So BAP is rooting hormone? sry i've never heard it called this before

How do I create feminized marijuana seeds?
When growing regular marijuana seeds, the resulting plants end up being about 50% male and 50% female. This can be a big disadvantage to the grower because male plants do not produce high-quality buds. However, if you create feminized marijuana seeds, then the resulting plants will all grow up to be female.

While there are a few different ways to create your own feminized seeds, for some people making your own feminized seeds may be impractical.
    How it Works
The main method used to create feminized seeds is to take a female plant and force it to grow male sex organs and produce pollen. You can then take this all-female pollen and use it to fertilize other females. Because all the genetic material comes from females, you will end up with seeds that are at 99% female. Any male plants that do result when growing feminized seeds are probably genetic females that are growing with male characteristics.

There are several processes by which female plants will grow male characteristics. Some female marijuana plants will start growing male organs if they are left in flowering for too long, as a last ditch attempt to pollinate themselves since they were not pollinated by any male plants. Some female plants will also show male characteristics as a result of heat and light stress. Lastly, you can actually force almost any female plant into showing male characteristics by treating it with some sort of solution such as colloidal silver.

Here's a Break-down of the two main methods:

How to Feminize Seeds Using Rodelization
    Pros:

    All-Natural
    Very Simple
    Cons:

    Unreliable
May not produce many feminized seeds
The Rodelization method is all-natural and is the simplest method to create feminized seeds, but it is also unreliable and may not produce much pollen. Basically, the premise is that some female marijuana plants will start growing male pollen sacs / sex organs if they've been left in flowering too long (past the peak point of harvest). This is a last-ditch attempt by the marijuana plant to pollinate itself so that it at least produces a few seeds. You can collect these male pods and use the pollen inside them to pollinate other female plants. You pollinate female plants by evenly covering their buds with the pollen after they've been in flowering for 2-3 weeks. Females that are pollinated in this way will start growing all-female marijuana seeds. If you're very careful, you can pollinate only some of the buds on a plant which will produce seeds, and leave other buds alone so they can still be used for consumption.

This issue with this method is that some strains of plants never seem to grow male characteristics naturally. Additionally, with this method, you're selecting for plants that have a natural genetic tendency to show male characteristics. This can possibly produce offspring that are more likely to show male characteristics themselves which may or may not be what you're going for. Lastly, even when you do get male pollen sacs from a marijuana plant in this way, there tends to be a lot less pollen than from a typical male plant.

The one great thing about this method is it's completely all-natural so you can implement this strategy with an organic grow.

How to Feminize Seeds Using Colloidal Silver
    Pros:

Works on just about any female marijuana plant
    Works consistently
    Produces many seeds
Easy to do once you have colloidal silver
    Cons:

You will need to find a source of colloidal silver, whether you're buying colloidal silver directly, buying a colloidal silver generator, or making your own colloidall silver generator yourself (instructions below)
It is not safe to directly use/consume any marijuana plants which have been treated with colloidal silver. However, that is not such a big deal since they're 'male' plants and don't produce much usable bud anyway. However, any seeds produced by a treated plant's pollen are 100% safe
When a female plant is treated with a solution of tiny silver particles suspended in distilled water, the plant will start to exhibit male characteristics. This solution of silver in water is called colloidal silver and can be purchased from a pharmacy/online or easily made at home. Some people drink colloidal silver for its health benefits and others use it occasionally on plants to help control bacteria, insect, and fungus growth on the leaves.

However, if you thoroughly mist a female plant with colloidal silver every day for 10-14 days around the same time that it enters the flowering stage, the concentration of silver ions in the water actually act as an ethylene inhibitor/antagonist on the plant, which forces the plant to create male pollen sacs instead of female buds. The safest way to ensure that your plants will actually turn into males is to keep misting the plants until you see the beginning of male pollen sacs forming.

You need to let the sacs swell like a big empty balloon. You will be able to tell when they are about to open because the leaf section protecting the pollen starts to crack. At this point, simply take the pollen sacs off and place them in a cool dry place for a week and let them start to dry. The pollen will come out if you shake them about a little, or you can also cut open the sacs to get to the pollen inside. Use this pollen to pollinate female plants and you will get all-female seeds that are a mix of both their mothers.

This method is great because it will force almost any marijuana plant to show male characteristics. Unlike the rodelization method, there is no selecting for a natural genetic tendency to show male characteristics. This method will also produce a lot of pollen consistently compared to the rodelization method.

The one downside to this method is that it is not safe to use any of the marijuana buds off the plant that has been treated with colloidal silver. You should therefore destroy the plant after the pollen has been collected. You will also want to ensure that you clean off any remaining traces of silver off your equipment in case you accidentally contaminate another plant with silver.

Main things to keep in mind when using colloidal silver to induce male characteristics in your female marijuana plant:

Make sure you spray the plant with a strong enough solution (at least 30 PPM of silver)
Spray the plant thoroughly to drench the whole plant
Spray the plant regularly, at least once a day
Spray the plant every day until you see signs of male pollen sacs forming. Some hardy strains may need over 2-3 weeks spraying before they 'turn'.
    Where to Get Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is created by submersing two pieces of pure silver in distilled water, and then running an electric current between the two pieces of silver. The electric current will cause silver ions to be deposited in the water which creates a colloidal silver solution.

You can actually buy colloidal silver which has already been prepared and is ready for use. If you're purchasing colloidal silver, try to find a solution that has at least 30 PPM (parts per million) of silver. However, buying Colloidal Silver that is already prepared can get expensive.

A better option is to buy a relatively cheap colloidal silver generator to easily make your own colloidal silver. This Colloidal Generator kit comes with everything you need including silver. All you need to do is provide the water and a container.

You can also make your own colloidal silver generator at home. This simple diagram should illustrate what you need to do.

    Items Needed:

    9 volt battery
9v Battery Connector (less than $2 at a hardware or electronics store)
Pure .9999 or 999 Silver (yes it must be pure)
Distilled water (yes it must be distilled)
Alligator clips (Optional: but will make things much easier)
Soldering Iron (Optional: only needed if you want to use alligator clips)

When you first connect everything, you may be surprised because it will seem like nothing is happening. You will know if it worked by the next day because the whole process will leave a silvery residue on your silver. You may need to use sandpaper or something else rough to clean your silver each time after creating a batch of colloidal silver.

If you don't have a soldering iron and would still like to solder alligator clips onto your battery connector, then I recommend going to a hardware store and asking someone if they will help solder it for you.

Remember to keep your resulting colloidal silver solution away from any light or it will deteriorate and turn a dark gray color. If this happens, then you can no longer use the solution for creating feminized seeds.

Avoid most problems when making colloidal silver by:

    using pure (distilled) water
    using pure (999/.9999) silver
giving electrolysis enough time to work so you don't get a weak solution (at least overnight)
making sure the solution has as little contact with light as possible until
    source cannabis knowladge..

How to FEM cannabis seeds & using Silver Thiosulfate to create HERMI.

Anyone ever use this Soma tech to feminize seeds?
Creating feminized marijuana seeds is an art, there are a few different methods of application. I have written about some of my different methods of making cannabis seeds in previous HIGH TIMES articles. I have use gibberellic acid, light stress, ph stress, and fertilizer stress to force my plants to make marijuana seeds. All these methods are harsh on the plants, and some like the gibbrellic acid, are not organic. In my search for cleaner more earth-friendly ways of working with the cannabis plant, I have found a new way to make feminized cannabis seeds.

I must say that I get a lot of help from my friends, both in making marijuana seeds and learning new and better ways of working with this sacred plant.

I named this new method “Rodelization” after a friend who helped me realize and make use of this way of creating female cannabis seeds. After growing crop after crop of the same plant in the same conditions, I noticed that if I flowered the plants 10-14 days longer than usual, they would develop male “bananas”. A male banana is a very slight male flower on a female marijuana plant that is formed because of stress. Usually they do not let out any pollen early enough to make marijuana seeds, but they sometimes do. They are a built in safety factor so in case of sever conditions, the plant can make sure that the species is furthered.

To me a male banana is quite a beautiful thing. It has the potential of making all female pot seeds. Many growers out there have male banana phobia. They see one and have heart palpitations, they want to cut down the entire crop or at least take tweezers and pluck the little yellow emerging devices out. I call them “Emergency Devices” because they emerge at times of stress.

In the Rodelization method, the male banana is very valuable. After growing your female plant 10-14 days longer than usual, hang them up to dry, then carefully take them off the drying lines and inspect for bananas. Each and every banana should be removed and placed in a small bag labeled very accurately. These sealed bags can be placed in the fridge for one to two months and still remain potent.

For the second phase you need to already have a crop that’s already 2 weeks into flowering. Take your sealed bag of pollen out of the fridge, and proceed to impregnate your new crop of females. To do this, you must first match the female plant and the pollen from the same strain in the previous crop. Shut down all the fans in the grow room. Then take a very fine paint brush, dip it in the bag of pollen, and paint it on the female flower. Do this to each different strain you have growing together. I have done it with ten different kinds in the same room with great success.

I use the lower flowers to make weed seeds, leaving the top colas seedless for smoking. This method takes time(two crops), but is completely organic and lets you have great quality smoke at the same time you make your female cannabis seeds. If you’re one of those growers that has never grown marijuana seeds for fear of not having something good to smoke, you will love this method.

You can also use this pollen to make new female crosses by cross pollinating. The older females with the bananas can be brought into the room with the younger, un-pollinated females when they are three weeks into flowering. Turn all of the circulation fans on high, and the little bits of pollen will proceed to make it around the room. Do this for several days. Six to seven weeks later you will have ripe 100% female seeds; not nearly as many as a male plant would make, but enough to start over somewhere else with the same genetics.

As a farmer who has been forced to move his genetics far away from where they started, I know very well the value of seeds. My friend Adam from THSeeds in Amsterdam has a motto that I love to borrow these days: “Drop seeds not bombs”.
