    Hello all,

I have begun germination using the Ronin method (https://www.autoflower.net/forums/threads/germination-the-ronin-way.33891/) currently no sign of any sprouts yet (in rapid rooter about 20hours so early days). The germ dome is 76 - 80F and humidity is around 56% which seems to be good. I am using a spray bottle to keep the Rapid rooters damp as it is on a heat mat.

Grow tent set up is a 3x3 w a 600w air cooled light and 2 DWC buckets. In the future I want to upgrade my airpump and go for max O2 but for now it is fine, just a finances thing!

Grow tent is sitting ~75F and my PPM from my well is ~90PPM as well as PH being about 6.4. I have my extractor fan set up to extract the air when the tent get's too warm and things seem to be sitting pretty right now. Currently my 600w light is running at 50% in anticipation of seedlings. Res temps are ~65. Humidity in grow tent is a little low but I have been misting the walls with a spray bottle to get it up. I live in a dry and cold place so that is reflective of the outer environment but I am aiming for that good VPD.

Calibrated PPM meter and even my PH solution (haha probably unnecessary) yesterday so all is ready to go!

Nutes are Fox Farms Organic, Going to fill the water to the bottom of the netpot to start with an 1/8 solution once I see a seedling and also top water with a spray bottle.

Will upload pictures later of general grow set up for those that are interested. Super excited to start! A link to my introduction post if anyone wants it: https://www.autoflower.net/forums/threads/new-grower.69518/

Good luck with the grow! Sounds like you have done the necessary homework and are ready to take the DWC plunge! I say it's a good decision!

I am subbed in for this one!

Grow tent, It sits empty and waiting! Temps are ranging from ~70F to ~77F . I have Hydroguard for the buckets although I don't think it is necessary it seems like a good precaution. From looking at a few PH charts I think that range of temps is good anyways for nute uptake. Humidity has been low but I am misting the walls daily while it is empty and have not measured as I am using the meter in my germ station.

Germination, I am following the Ronin way and I must be messing up somehow as I am 48hours in and nothing. I had pre-tore my rapid rooters before I placed the beans just so I could check and upon checking not even a tap root.... Maybe I am being overly cautious of not soaking them? I have attached some pics below of what I have going. All help is appreciated.

Temps fluctuate between 74-78 and humidity has been as low as 50% . It is a standard germ dome with a heat mat that I have a towel over and I have the rooters placed on the edge of that so it does not get too warm and kill the seed. My current plan of action is to increase water to the seed although I am terrified of damping off. I live in a kinda remote place but may make the trek to get calmomile tea or something as an anti fungal?

Hi 11b — so I’m a total noob as well, just finishing my first ever grow. I’m in DWC too. I’ll share my thoughts on things but don’t take anything as gospel — schools of thought only.

My humidity runs low 95% of the time. I have to supplement with a humidifier and it goes on at least once a day. I have it set at 45 right now and it keeps general conditions in the tent at about 50. I have a bunch of cheap hygrometers and I put them all over the place because I have differing humidity needs ranging from days old seedlings to plants in late flower. Tomorrow I’m harvesting a plant and I’ll need to maintain a second tent at about 50% for a few 4 or 7 days.

The other 5% of the time the humidity is too high, and in rolls the dehumidifier.

I have a healthy respect for humidity and I’ll tell you why. Especially in DWC. In young plants, if humidity is too low, leaf transpiration suffers and the plant is forced to take in moisture primarily through the roots. This results in increased nutrient uptake as well, setting the stage for too high N consumption (and poor calcium uptake?). Which throws other things off. Leaf burn when nutrient concentration isn’t, in fact, too high. Shooting from the hip about here, experienced readers, please school me. Anyways, long story longer, I respect humidity and 60% where you are at it good right now. Here is a VPD chart for your reference. 74EA0F8F-7C2E-4DD2-9C1A-9C2E87020B0F.gif

I’m not familiar with the Ronin germination method. I soak in a cup for 24 hours and unless I’m lazy, put them in a dark warm wet paper towel until they have tails. Tails go in the rapid rooter in the dwc bucket. This last time I went from soaking directly to rapid rooters without a tail and skipped the paper towel as I was lazy. Only 3 out of 4 came up and I’ll have to redo one of them.

Love the picture of the empty tent. I see so much potential there. Coiled energy, ready to spring.

Thanks for the VPD reference, In my mind I thought of the seed starting as somehow different! Good to be reminded to KISS! If they do not pop or show signs in the next few hours I think I will drop them in water and then into the tent in a rooter as you do! Unless someone can tell me a reason not too, How deep are you putting the seedling with a tap root into the rapid rooter?

Thanks very much for your perspective!

I agree with everything DG says, especially about the importance of maintaining the sweet spot with temp and humidity. If you can do that, you will be successful.

The only thing I would add is to give it at least three days, probably four before pulling the plug. It isn’t unusual for seeds to take that long.

Probably the most important thing I learned and you will find, is that having patience is important as hell. You are going to want to do something, to make a change, to add this, experiment with that. Resist those urges! Listen to the plants. They will tell you when to do something different.

I put them down into the rapid rooter once they get a tail, tail pointed down, less than a half inch but more than a quarter.

Resist the urge to peek inside the rapid rooter. Just check the bottom of the net pot for the root(s) to emerge so you can stop wetting them when they dry.
