Yeah but a higher testing plant will yield more oil so it does mean something and I'm not telling you I could tell the exact percentage but bud in my vape that is more resiny lasts longer. But there probably are things we can't quantify in a lab that contribute to effects they just found a new cannabinoid that is more potent than Delta nine. So just cause a bud is lower thc doesn't mean it can't have unique terps or cannabinoids and effects

I don't know of a landrace that tests that high. And personally, I don't believe for a minute you can tell a 30% tested bud from a 20%. And for whatever reason THC % doesn't mean a lot unless it's really low. There are hash plants out there that will test 10-12% that will stone you but good! And trait expression in landrace can be consistent withing a particular strain, so some are and some aren't. Modern hybrids are the same, depending on the breeding, you can have genotypes that you may think are pheno types, and potency, flavor, etc can vary among them also.
My point is that some selective work can really bring out some gems in a population, and speak to the potential of that cultivar. I take all lab tests with a grain of salt, but since that was a private grower testing it out for breeding purposes, I'm inclined to make due note of it... They are out there pop, those freakishly potent heirloom/lr. phenotypes... Some of the folks at this private forum are all about landraces, many doing testing for both cannabinoids and terp's, not necessarily looking for the most potent, but what pheno's they liked the most and what sort of chemotypes they show so they can try to isolate those preferred pheno's...
A recent run of ACE New Caladonia #23 produced a very high THC% as well, still a pretty raw population in this recent release... others were more in line with what you'd expect from such a population... Ooo, that one also had red sap, not a correlation (likely) just a fun feature... Dubi know this breeder well, and sends him special lots to try, but there are two publicly available types at their site, one is a bit more "Indica" leaning and faster...

As for AoF, those successive repro's done by Baldy, Stick and maybe 1-2 more down the line can certainly change things!
@Frank the Dank knows SloMo, who made a Bubba K cross with it and got high THC% and some with that CBD content too, so one never knows what will fall outta the genetic tree, or what's hidden in there... There are 3-4 aroma types too in AoF population, but the berry and the burnt rubber are the ones folks seem to be chasing.

I hear you on the madness of THC% though! Talking with friends who own dispensaries, they say it's now the primary driving force for pricing, that and the fucking nit-wit hype for names ( like all this dessert crap, Glue this, OG that, Cookies the other fucking thing).... What a shame, and there is lamentation over how unsophisticated the gen pop' is still on cannabis. Quality and nature of the high is not on the minds of most consumers, aside from "couch-locky" or "activity friendly"... And we all know the terms "Sativa" and Indica" are nonsense in any Botanical sense, the taxonomy doesn't bear that out. It's strictly conventional now - :rolleyes1: .... the savvy know that most of the quality and nature of a given high are down to the terpene profiles, and lesser extent cannabinoids unless there's a glaring elevation in CBD or the other rarer types...

This year I got lucky to get hold of something very special, The Doors x Original Haze... It's nearly pure Haze in heritage, but this cross had a magic wand waved over it and it has unaccountable speed in blooming. Most true Hazes are 3-4+ month bloomers, this cross can finish in 9-10, and mine look like they will be done in about 8! The reverse cross, OHz x Doors, last grow i saw was 141 days in bloom and not quite done yet, so there's a measure of how amazing this find was! The breeder was not looking for it, he was after that special high, deep nostalgia for those late '70's effects from Haze back then :smoking:..and he found it after sourcing from several p-laces and a couple years of grows... this cross was a tester only, due the the Door's high % Haze genetics, but has a dash of Skunk#1 and NL5 in it... Fun stuff! So many folks there have been raving about the effects, found it plenty potent but like we've been harping about, they aren't looking for 1-hit shit, they want a smoking experience and that unique high only such lost genetics can offer... :jointman:

I can't wait for them, their aroma has a yummy mango-like note, Hazey metallic/citrus, a little incense... Hit my link and come have a look!

Idk - I've grown genetics from elite breeders that I didn't like or had bad germination rates. This after I've personally germinated many tens of seeds without incident.

My first auto wasn't elite - Fastbuds Mexican Airlines. I was so happy with it that I planted two more. The first one netted me well over two ounces. Between the next two I only netted 1/2 ounce total. To this date that first Mexican Airlines was the only awesome auto I've ever grown.

No, I don't have a lot of experience growing cannabis. But in all cases (including two other popular strains I won't mention), I was the same person during the same first year of growing. So I don't think you can expect the level of quality in autos you would expect when growing photos.

Granted, I'm still learning, an my results might not be typical. If anyone wants to say it's my fault, I'd be inclined to agree. But many auto breeders including the "creme-de-la-creme," have a long way to go to get hardy, reliable, easy-to-grow genetics to us.

As far as terpenes - I smoked a lot of good weed in the 70s. Some of it smelled good and was good to smoke. Some of it smelled bad and was good to smoke. In all cases, if it was good weed, the high was so much better than the stuff we have now that there's no comparison. Personally? I think this obsession with THC levels has ruined the plant. I think it's cannabinoids, not terpenes. And most old plants probably had similar percentages of cannabinoids but they weren't all the same cannabinoid like they are now.

Nosy bug aren't you?
People shop THC% like shopping craft beer for abv. It's not the whole story, just the one aspect they can wrap their heads around. If beer had been illegal for years and years, most wouldn't understand the entire body of work that "beer" encompasses. ABV? Yeah higher % means more drunk quicker! I think we are just seeing the general public latch onto the one thing that is easily understood.

I love a good aged geuze. Try explaining a $20 12oz bottle of open fermented Belgian lambic to an 18 yr old that wants a handle of vodka. It'll take time for people to grow out of the party hard stage.

I can't even explain the difference between wet-hopped beer and IPAs to most of my family. It's pretty obvious to me and matters a lot. But to most people beer is beer and if you bring the really good stuff to a Superbowl party you're usually the only one drinking it. There is one exception: One guy I introduced the good stuff to became interested BECAUSE it was high abv.

I can't say I've never bought one because the ABV caught my eye....
Me too. I went on a quest to try every single beer at a local superstore. I never completed my quest. But I eventually learned what I really liked. I eventually gravitated to high abv for health reasons, actually. At least that's my excuse. :headbang:
