That's a tough one because shopping cart and payment processing are expensive and painful, especially for a small shop.
Understandable. I run an online (shirt) business. Obviously not such a grey area thing. Easier for me to get a site with an integrated cart and payment processing and such. But, I have looked into it for what I do on a more dedicated standalone thing, and it would be hell. Not to mention, again, that I'm not doing the whole souvenir thing.

But there's 3 breeders already that you can buy from directly. Whether you like those 3, or not, is a total YMMV.:

Mephisto (Mondays)
Twisted Tree
New420guy

Has to be more? I'm not saying there's a need to cut out seed banks whatsoever. There are a few that I will deal with that I can trust. I've never had the time to seek out and try and grab RocBud from their own drops. Maybe some day.

Also, on the topic of FB etc. I was in that boat of not discriminating so much. I thought it was my natural evolution as a "grower" and lover of the Auto Challenge, to seek out better genetics. For the longest time I only grew New420guy stuff and while I never had a single, issue...I bought into the "I must be missing something" hype. And started branching out into the FB, Sweets, etc etc.

What I came to find is that they're not BAD. I mean they're good. And sometimes good is good enough. But what I did notice is virtually little difference between super hype, and like, little to no hype. Now I'm becoming much more discriminating though.

I will say in FB defense - I had an issue with a total mutant seed, or pack of seeds from them. I contacted them and they replaced the entire pack. Sent directly from Spain in a DVD case FWIW.

....
The thing is nobody can own the genetics they create, they can own their brand but not the genetics. This has far more advantaged than it does disadvantages. But one of the down sides is that anyone with very limited actual breeding knowledge can jump in on the game to try and make a quick buck. Most of the time the lack of quality in the lines will weed out the bad actors.
....
Lack of the patent system extending to cannabis causes many problems (besides lack of trademark protection too), with no organized system for claiming and documenting invention-related plant genome 'ownership.' Anybody is able to effectively 'own' any strain, meaning nobody really owns them. This includes anyone (or company) able to do full gene sequencing, protein/metabolic mapping, etc. and/or more classic breeding legally able to 'create' their own strains, even if exact copies. Here ownership is in the sense that anyone can make and do whatever they want, including selling seeds, while keeping the source information and genetics proprietary, a trade secret. Full control of manufacture and sales of a commodity (even if a bogus rip-off copy) = ownership.

Effectively, you can't prevent others from breeding or copying seeds obtained legally (much as you can't prevent anyone from reusing non-trademarked strain names). No one (at least in US and most other high tech. patent-honoring countries) can "own" cannabis strains in the sense of patenting them, can prevent others from using/selling their inventions/strains by suing for patent infringement or alleging theft of information, sequences, clones, seeds, etc.

But inclusion of cannabis in countries' mainstream and plant-specific patent systems will likely adversely affect the smallest, individual-level breeders, with them likely forced to remain small-time in the 'grey' or non-patent-protected markets.

I'm still trying to figure out what this tread is about. Is the Dark horse guy calling out fastbuds as bad genetics, and is the terp182 upset because he thinks he got bad beans? I know absolutely nothing of DHG. Heck they may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or Mephisto. But I'd be willing to venture a guess that world wide more Fastbuds seeds are harvested in a single day, than DHG seeds are sold in a month. If the genetics suck as bad as DHG would like us to believe, they would not be so damn popular.

Do your homework kids. there are alot of good breeders out there, both large companies, and small 1-2 person operations. And link any industry, there are those looking to turn a buck. If you buy from i49, soma or any other flybynight, and think you are getting something other that bulk repackaged seed, well that's on you.

I purchase a bunch from 207Genetic. Name brand & his inhouse brand autos. I don't think for one minute that those inhouse are his genetics, that he's breeding. They are simply repackage bulk. I understand this, and am OK with it. Price is right, communication is good, & shipping is fast. So for the Great White & Strawberry Cheesecake i've grown have both been excellent. They did what they are supposed to do. They flowered w/in 30days, and finished under 90. The plants were frosty & the smoke good. The real test will be if future seeds produce similar phenos.

No this thread isn’t about who’s bigger or “better”, DHG or say Fastbuds. It’s about what you mentioned in the second paragraph - doing our collective homework. See, some of the sellers you take for granted as fake aren’t obvious fakes, and can and do take advantage of new growers. The point of this is to help shed light on the fakes/liars (yes I’d throw dishonest white labels into that, as opposed to the up front white labels like you mentioned).

I don't understand what "fake" seeds are. Can anyone provide some examples, whether real or hypothetical? Is it really the seeds (don't grow to resemble what they're supposed to), bogus claims about the breeding that was performed and/or marketing claims that are "fake?"

Yes
The way I see it, you understand.
Let's use Dark Horse Genetics and his baby that he bred Bruce Banner. His Bruce Banner seeds (barring small pheno differences) produced reliable and repeatable results. However, all of a sudden seed banks world wide were selling Bruce Banner at OG Bruce Banner premium (or not). But these seeds are not and couldn't be DHG Bruce Banner.

The seeds you buy may still produce great weed, just not the weed you were expecting or paid for.

MBS mind body & soul
When you buy seeds instead of buying genetics, conversations like these will keep occurring. Just because it says genetics on the pack doesn’t mean that what you are getting.
Genetics show you what you purchased, packs don’t show you crap.
Before complaining, learn what genetics are..
Here are some genetics.

But you buy packs

So what’s all the complaining about. For real, you get what you pay for. Keep thinking that you are getting genetics. Because if you were getting genetics, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
Beyond popular believe, genetics aren’t sold in f1’s or f2’s, the likes, Those are packs.
You buy packs to create genetics. You don’t buy that stuff expecting genetics.
Something isn’t adding up here. Say it with me one time. “Cheap genetics”. Say it again “cheap genetics”. Tell me where they do that at?¿.
I already have said too much, because it’s not going to change anything. The same ones that are complaining today, will go out and buy cheap packs tomorrow. And continue to complain about how poorly their purchase performed.
I may sound arrogant, or as if I’m in a rant, but I’m telling y’all some good stuff. Those cheap packs are everywhere, you have to dig a little deeper to get genetics because they aren’t being passed out all over the net.

Great comparison with those horse pictures.
Is it? Where's the horse fetus' in an egg that I'm supposed to buy? How do I tell which egg is going to produce my Arabian horse?

When someone buys seeds they really have no idea what is going to be the end result. Period.

It doesn't matter if you are Married to the breeder, mistakes can be made that are entirely out of your control.

Horse pictures though. Alright.
