    I would do holes all the way to the top, stopping around 4 inches from the rim. you'll get less side hole run off leaving a few inches for the water to sink into the medium.

    Have you tried them side by side? Air pruning is nothing new or mysterious. In horticulture classes back in the 80s we used to cut off the bottom of seedling trays to air prune the tap root, or drill out pots to air prune the side roots. Worked great.

    No, I have never compared Air-Pot vs. containers with drilled holes, but I use both. I normally have going Air-Pots plus a rectangle plastic waste basket or 2 with holes drilled jammed to a side or in a corner (all in 3 gallon range). For me, plants grow much the same no matter the container.

    There surely must be good reasons why Air-Pots, which cost more, are so popular. If you look, you should be able to find lots of Air-Pot reviews and side-by-side grows.
