I haven’t been on the forum in a while because I took a little break from growing. Now that I’m back at it and involved in an interesting grow, I thought I’d start a grow log here. I’ve already started the grow but it’s only been a couple of weeks so it should still be fun. This is a tester run (I’m just one of about 40, I think) for Capulator’s MAC, Version 2. Since the original MAC is cut-only I think it’s awesome to be part of testing out a seed version from the master himself. Technically, these are: Miracle #4 x Alien Cookies #7 F2 from JAWS. The Miracle plant came from the very last 6 seeds known to be in existence after they were kindly gifted back to Cap with the intention of creating V2. According to Capulator, 4 of the 6 beans popped but 3 were males. The one female is known as #4. Now you know the progeny.

This is a 100% organic soil grow, without the use of any bottled nutrients. The soil is Build A Soil’s V2 kit that I built about 6 months ago with rice hulls as 1/2 the aeration and volcanite for the other 1/2. These plants will only get water, AACT and other biological inputs - NO bottled or salt-based nutrients. Seddlings start under T5 3500k bulbs and I generally keep them there until they hit the 5th or 6th node. After that, they get topped and will be moved to my 4x4 veg tent where they’ll be vegged (18/6) under a 320W 3500k LED fixture I built with HLG/Samsung boards. For flower they’ll move to my 5x5 flower tent where they’ll receive 640W of 3500k from another HLG/Samsung fixture I built a while back.

I received 12 regular seeds for the run and I germinated them with the towel paper method. I had 8 seeds pop at 48 hours and they went into 1/2 filled solo cups with 3/4” tails. The seedling soil was a mixture of my regular soil thinned out 1:4 with screened peat moss. 2 other seeds cracked but didn’t produce much in the way of tails; so I left them in paper towels for another day and then put them in soil anyway. 1 of those seeds emerged and the other one failed. The remaining two seeds didn’t pop and after 5 days I manually cracked them. Even so, after another 5 days they still hadn’t produced any tap root at all. So, they were discarded. In the end, I have 9 plants to work with. My plan is to keep ONE male and, of course, I’ll be evaluating all the females - and keeping cuts of at least one female.

Cap asked that all the testers separate the big seeds from the small ones to see if we found any correlation between size and results, traits, etc. I took it a step further and measured (length and width) EACH seed with calipers and weighed each one. I numbered each seed and I’m tracking each one throughout the grow. They’re numbered 1-12, starting with the largest (#1) and ending with the smallest one. I won’t bother posting all the measurements but I wanted to explain what the numbering was about and what it signifies.

Hope some people enjoy following along. It’s nice to be back among friends here on AFN!

Here are some pix of the seedlings from the other day. You can see that one of them is a runt - that’s the one seed that cracked late and was growing slowly.. I’ve named it “Runty.” Lol!

Here’s one getting transplanted to a 6” pot. The hole has Myco, GrowKashi, insect frass and a nitrogen metabolizing microbe in it.

The last set of pictures was taken Tuesday. Here are some I JUST took - today is Friday. You can see that, in spite of the transplant, they're growing quite well. In three days, immediately following a transplant, they've picked up 2+ nodes. The MAC isn't known for its speedy growth and part of Cap's goal (as I understand it), aside from wanting a version that produces consistent plants from seed, was to get a little more vigor out the MAC. Seems like there IS a possibility for some increased vigor in these plants.

There's poor little "runty" working to keep up. Maybe I should rename him "Beetlebaum!" Lol! I'm going to be very surprised if anyone understands that reference. Haha! Something from my childhood that my dad turned me on to...from HIS childhood.

I added the story of the progeny of MAC version 2 to my original post. So, if you want to know what went into it, scroll back up to the top. It's an interesting story. At least I thought so.

Glad to have you watching! Yeah, the elusive Mac. Lol! I have only tried it a couple times but loved it. I never had a chance to get a cut either; but was in the right time at the right place to get invited to be a tester of Cap’s 2nd version. Since it’s from seed, instead of a cut, I was able to participate. Very very lucky. Lots of pressure, though. All put on myself but it’s one of those special grows that you especially want to do everything right. Part of it is logging the grow in Cap’s forum (another site) so you know he’s watching all the time. Lol! Let me know when you get your own log started!

Quick update. Things progressing nicely. I started up the big humidifier to bring the humidity up to the 65%-72% range. I watered with Agsil, Recharge, TM7 and Therm-X. I’m really liking the structure of #3,#5, & #7. Hopefully one or more of them will turn out to be a female and be ‘the one.’ They also have the most vigor (so far) of the bunch. Obviously way to early to make any final judgements but they look the most promising right now.

#3 Not sure how easy you can see the structure in the picture but it does look good. As I usually do, I’ll top above the 5th node to end up with 10 main stems that I’ll LST train and top. This usually gives me a really nice harvest in a reasonable timeframe. I got these wire training rings on my last run and they’re pretty handy for early LST in those 6” pots; and they come apart for easy removal, when they’re no longer needed. They were on Amazon for super cheap.

Hit a minor milestone today (Day 20) - I topped 8 of the plants. Only Runty was exempted because it’s only at the 3rd node right now; however, given the delayed start, it’s actually close to the same track as its siblings- just a few days behind. Rather than snipping each one at the 5th node, as I usually do, I snipped each plant just above its current top node. This meant about 1/2 were at the 5th node and half were at the 6th. Here’s how it went....

#1 - 5th node

#2 - 6th node

#3 - 5th node

#5 - 6th node

#7 - 6th node

#8 - not topped - only 3 nodes currently

#9 - 5th node

#12 - 5th node

I know there’s some hesitation with many MAC growers about topping, out of concern for a setback. Since I’ve never grown a MAC strain before I’m probably being ignorant but I wanted to follow my normal practices, as much as possible. I’ve learned (AutoBeast over on AutoFlower.net) that I can top autoflowers, contrary to many great growers’ belief, as long as I do it between day 10 and day 21 - I’ve done it many times now without ANY stalling out. So, I decided to apply that concept here. Autos are thought to be so sensitive to stress but within that little window, early on, they just don’t seem to be susceptible. My hope is that the same will hold true with MAC. With that said, I don’t think I’ll be doing any additional topping in this test run because I don’t want to have any significant setbacks. I’ll keep an open mind but that’s my thinking now.

I said it before but I’m really happy with the structure of these plants- the branching is really impressive and I feel like I’m going to be able to do some great LST with them; to create a nice level canopy.

They got watered with Recharge, ThriveN and Agsil today and are looking super healthy! Can’t ask for much more.
