I have a bitch/Question..What size pot do you grow in....?

I'm a newbee and a bit of a redneck.I hear that 5gallon is best over all.But I started in a 4x4 tent and figured I'd try gal ones...So I went looking in the local stores..I found 3 gallon waste cans that are 10 inchs round and about 16 inchs tall..Thought cool, they are tall and the roots can grow deep and strong..And Mt 1st grow to date seem to like that..But I'm planning a 2nd grow and have heard alot about air pots and smart pots ..Thought I'd try one of them.So I got 5 smart pots today in the mail...What a shock I got..Says 3 gallon..and .40 cubic feet..Hmmm I did the math...40 cubic feet is 2 gallon..Very Very disappointed..May not even use them.....

At that rate ,my 3 gallon cans are = to the 5 gallon..I tested them too..just a touch over 3 gallon of water they hold.

So what size pot are you growing in?

3gal pots are most common, 5 gals are probably best reserved for photoperiods and "super autos" like some of the big Dutch Passion strains. 1 and 2 gals are fine for tight spaces or breeding. Kinda depends on what ya want and your particular setup :) but 3 gal is the norm usually.

I have grown in everything from a 16 oz cup to five gallon. For a 4x4 tent, you are giving up some growing height with 5 gallon, and I'm not sure what kind of lighting you have and not sure what you are growing. As

Thanks Anthropolis..But really have to try'd the math and see what they hold..A gallon is a gallon. No matter if its water or soil..I'm thinking,if you really check the vol of most grow pots are rated over sized..A #2 nursery pot is not 2 gallon..How do they figure out the vol.????

WGL...So if I want a taller crop I need to use a shorter pot...Don't think so..Sorry..Your right ther is alot of condishions that play part..Ok here is really what I want to know..I get a 22lbs bag of Happy Frog..I get about 4 pots full from that..Cost is $18 US..These 3 gallon smart pots I figure I'll get 6 maybe 7..Big cost diff..But will I get about the same plant life out of my 4 as the 6 smart pots..

I grew some pretty big plants out of 3g smart pots. They look pretty disproportionate when large but work fine imo. The roots werent anywhere near bound or even really showing at first when i peeled off the smartpot. Ive since picked up 3g (i think?) Airpots but made the switch just for reusability and easy of moving a rigid pot

Edit: heres one i chopped the other day, no giant but about 3' tall and probably 3oz+ and it was part of my 2nd grow

One thing worth mentioning, sinca ya brought it up, for some reason I still haven't figured out lol pot makers long ago decided to measure their pots in what they call "trade gallons". So what they call a 3 gal is actually smaller than 3 actual gallons of water volume.

It's probably just fine to use the 3 gallon trash bins like you mentioned :) just drill some drainage holes in the bottom. It would end up being a bit bigger than a "3 gal" pot. That's okay.

Thanks all....I did just that Anthropolis for my 1st grow.About 20 1/4 inch holes in the bottom, they seem to be working well I might add..Now that i have the smart pots,I'll give them a try in my 2nd grow..I get four plants in my 4x4 tent,so I have planned two diff stain.I might try one of each in my trash cans and the other in the smart pot..I do like the idea of the air prunning that they are to do...
