This is my first go with a semi-hempy bucket. I followed this thread instructions as far as layering the permit vermiculite. But instead of putting the hole 2inches from bottom I put 4 5/16 holes on each side of bucket on the side close as I could get to the bottom. And stuck the bucket in a tote. Gallon and a half of water brings the water level to about 2.5 inches above bottom of bucket and this girl is drinking that daily. I just add water right to the tub. So much faster and can hold more water. It makes Beasts! This girl is in a 5x5 room and has almost filled the whole room! For sure this will be my new growing technique and can't see a difference so far from my rdwc grows and there is no water or nute waste or changing out rezes and up keep with pumps and air pumps. That looks cool. Is that a photo and do you water down the stem to start or into the tote from the start?

I circled around the bucket when she first started and when I was sure roots were down in bucket I just started adding it to the tote. It is a photo.

Did anyone try using pumice in hempy instead of perlite? Is it a bad idea?

I would think pumice would absorb and hold too much water.

    Everything
for anyone interested. i am trying a hybrid hempy in current grow. just dropped a heisenberg special from mephisto for it. by hybrid i mean using soil and hempy style.

explanation. filled 5 gallon bucket up til about 6 inches left of room from top. perlite til the holes. i made 3 tap holes just for a little extra air and drainage. "very fine perlite" anyway. perlite up to holes. then perlite vermiculite mix til about 6 inches from top. from there up. its a soil mix. liked idea of hempy. love the soil. got really baked and had the idea to use a hempy style to try to simulate a plant near water like a stream or pond and tapping down into an underground water source. just stoner innovation lol .

might turn out to be a total failure. might waste a bean. or maybe. its work out really well. in which case. ill be thinking of hybrid hempys name in near future lol. made on and inspired by AFN!

if anyone knows of anyone doing this or have tried this let me know please. i have looked. cant find anything. seen people use a layer of fiber on top. but thats the closest i have seen to the hybrid trial.
    cheers guys.

    Awesome thread!
I want to convert from soil to dwc, and thought hempy would be a good place to learn, just have a few questions if anyone cares to answer..

I have fresh bottles of GH 3 part nutes.
And buckets full of 100% perlite ready to rock and roll!

Firstly, can the Lucas formula be used in hempy? If so should I need to add anything else? Silicon, cal/mg ect? Or does the formula provide enough?

Second, if Lucas can't be used, will using just the three bottles of GH as base nutes supply everything the plants need?

(I've never used proper bottles nutrients before)

Third, why hasn't anyone tried using an airstone like other hydro methods? I get the point of hempy is to draw air down through the perlite as the water drains, but wouldn't adding oxygen keep the nutes in the res better for longer? Would also make the perlite dry up faster and force seedling roots to hunt for water faster:shrug:yes.. no? I'm just brain storming here.

And lastly, what's the go with ph? Test it, don't test it? I would test it.. but my pen just broke so if I don't need to check ph I won't bother buying a new one.
And another quick one, I thought OC+ realises it's ferts according to temps? Not wether the soil is dry or wet.. if I can get a 100% sure answer on this I wouldn't mind trying the osmocote way aswel.
Thanks to anyone that's answers my questions.. happy growing guys!

I can only answer to the 3rd question: it has been tried and found of no added value...
