Reverse osmosis VS tap water for hydro?

  • Well, we're still working on things and I imagine we'll see some bugs, some breaking, and things that need to get fixed. We'll start on the most critical things first and work our way down. We're still installing add-on's and squaring away some licensing stuff, but feel free to browse the board and we'll update everyone on when things are added, restored, or otherwise changed.

My tap water is 150 ppm. My ro water tests at 0ppm. Is there any benefits of using tap water over ro? I'm not trying to go sterile. I use hydroguard also. I add calimagic, then micro then grow then bloom. Stirring after adding each chemical bites. Hydrolysed goes in last after I ph my water. I usually add about 200 ppm of calimagic first before base nutrients. Wasn't happy first run with Indica and arrived. Made lots of mistakes my first grow. Trying to do autoflowers and not make the same mistakes this round.

Can't really offer any helpfully info as my tap water tests at 0.04 EC which is basically nothing..

I think 150ppm is ok but I wouldn't be Keen if it were much more.

Just keep an eye on scale and salt buildup if using that tap water and chem notes.

I have water from ro system that hits 0ppm though. Wouldn't all the bad stuff taken out be better for plants? I grew with tap my very first grow and it worked. But I read all over online that a ro system is better water cuz it removes chlorine and chloramine and other bad stuff. But you have to add calcium and magnesium back in order to make sure your water has an EC so the other nutes will work in it and to replace the calmag that is lost in the ro process too. I usually add 200 ppm of calimagic by general hydroponics in my Dwc buckets

I've heard that also, if you have a ro system then that's the way to go for sure!

Using Calmag first time this run (mainly due to my light) but it may well be helping!

Recently compared some old pics to my current one and the girls are much happier this time out.

There isnt even a debate R/O is better. You can use tap and 150ppm for tap is actually good. The average tap water is 140-400 ppm's. If you have to use tap let it sit for a day so chlorine can evaporate. There is a lot of other shit in your water too, like rust that you can't see. If you have access to r/o then just use that, dont ask anymore questions trust me use it lol. I couldn't believe what the filters looked like when I changed them. You will need to add calmag to you feed as it's removed during filtering. You can add filters that add it back in if you like, but for me it's just easier to add calmag. My r/o is usually under 10 and the bottle water from grocery store is around 25. I would only use tap if I had to.

Word that's what I was thinking too but I read online lots of people use tap water. I don't understand why not invest in pure water for your plants? Cost me 200 dollars for my system on Amazon before I started growing I set it up and never used tap water on them.

Yep, got mine on Ebay for around same price. Got a bunch of extra filter for free too. Some people dont want to spend money on something they "get for free", or they dont know about water and just use tap. Some would but may think it cost to much. I dont know hard to say. That's a them problem, not a me problem lol.

Consider yourself Lucky having that low of ppm for tap water. Mine is easily over 300, and leaves a slime in my buckets and on my airstones. Needless to say I buy an R/O filter every 4 months... I'd say you could get away with using that ppm, but obviously R/O water is better.

if nature is illegal, freedom doesnt exist..

I using RO with a system i bought on eBay for 40 bucks great stuff!!! You exactly now what you give that's alone is the argument for buying a RO system... You can Add also tap with RO 50:50 works also good. What's piss me off when you drop 1 pH down on RO the pH goes down under 5.0 with 50:50 everythink is OK.

If your actually running hydro, then you want a "clean" water source. You want to know everything in your reservoir. 150 is fairly low, and I'd certainly run it in a soil grow, but 150 ppm of what? I live in a delta area, and have that amount in salts in my tap... very bad for salt based nutes...
